top of page Frequently Asked Questions

The Nebraska Economic Develoment Information system was created in response to a nationwide movement to adopt a standard for economic development data coupled with a growing demand for online data, NPPD continues to enlarge and enhance its current online database (sites.nppd.com), to meet the ever-changing need for online data.

What are the AEDC/CUED National Data Standards?
A committee of site selection consultants and economic developers developed a set of data standards frequently used in evaluating plant locations. The data standards consist of 25 tables containing approximately 1,200 data elements on Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), counties, and communities. These standards have been adopted by the American Economic Development Council (AEDC) and the Council for Urban Economic Development (CUED). NEDI Online will comply with these data standards.

Who will use these data?
Business decision makers and site selection consultants will be able to access this interactive, online database to research information on Nebraska communities. Communities can use these data to prepare prospect proposals, for business recruitment, or to answer general information requests. These data will also assist local leaders in evaluating their communities. Because the database is free and accessible to the public, people wanting to move to a new location -- teachers, doctors, employees involved in relocation, prospective employees, etc. -- will also find the system to be of great value.

Will NPPD's searchable site and building database still be available?
Yes! This database has been expanded to include links to community Web sites, online Facts Books, in addition to online site and building brochures. The database contains information on every Nebraska community -- all 536 of them! A visitor may search by community or county name, population, and a variety of other attributes. New selection criteria now allows visitors to select those towns having current Facts Books online (3 years old or newer), a local Web site, or other online information. In the next phase of NEDI Online, even more site and building features will be introduced to help promote your area.

How do I know these data are reliable?
NPPD will regularly review and update information in the database to ensure the site is accurate and current. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) has agreed to review data for communities outside the NPPD service area.

What will this cost my community?
NOTHING! The basic set of data is free -- no matter how large or small your community. Supplemental fields are also provided to enhance community profiles. The supplemental fields populated by communities are also free of charge.

How do I make changes to my community's data?
An online manager system is available for communities wanting to update their data. The manager system is accessed via a secure user identification and password. Communities can update their information as often as they like. (See “Activate Your Community” form above.)

What's next?
Following the development of community profiles for every community in the state, additional reporting features will be added to the database system. Reporting features allow visitors to generate community reports on the fly-- including the entire data standard report, topic reports, comparison reports, and complete data downloads!

What about my Facts Book and Community Web Site?
NEDI Online complements your printed and online Facts Book and community Web Site. Keeping your Facts Book and Web site up-to-date will enable your community to also keep your online data standards up-to-date.  Communities are encouraged to link directly to their NEDI Online Community Profiles from their individual Web sites.

What about other data standard sources?
Many data vendors are soliciting communities across Nebraska, offering data standard packages for a fee. Communities are encouraged to market themselves using as many avenues as possible. Be assured your community can still receive full benefits of NEDI Online, regardless of how many supplemental services you utilize.

What if my city contact doesn’t want to receive e-mails?
Cities are the “owners” of NEDI Online and have the option of designating a third party to be responsible for populating data. The city contact should indicate on their “Activation” form if no copy of data changes to the system is needed. Otherwise, both parties will always be copied when data is submitted.

Additional Information
For additional information, please contact the Economic Development Department at Nebraska Public Power District by calling (800) 282-6773, ext 5541 or e-mailing EconDev@nppd.com.

top of page Tips for Using NEDI

Although NEDI Online has been thoroughly tested, the large number and variety of computer and Internet browsers on the market makes it nearly impossible to predict every possible user situation. Because of this, users may occasionally have trouble accessing or submitting data.

NEDI Online was built for you -- please let us know if you experience any difficulties accessing the system or extracting a profile.

Before calling, it is recommended you read the “tips” on this sheet as your problem may be easily resolved. If you are still having difficulty accessing your data, please have the following information ready prior to contacting us:

  • Your name and city
  • Your computer brand, memory and processor speed
  • Internet connection type and speed
  • Internet browser type and version (Note: to find out what browser version you have, simply click on “help” on your browser tool bar and then click on “about…” The version number should be listed at this location.)

What if I can’t log on to NEDI?
First make sure you are using the correct “userid” and “password.” Remember, they are case sensitive! If your browser prompts you for a “domain,” please enter “NEDI” in the domain space. If you have forgotten or lost your “userid” and “password,” please contact us for a new set.

What if I see a “500 error” when I try to submit data?
In most cases, users are trying to input too much data in a particular data field. If you get this error, please contact us and let us know which page you are working on. We should be able to help you in a matter of minutes. If necessary, we can alter the field characteristics to avoid this from happening again.

What if I see “page not available” or a “404 Error” message?
These messages appear when characters are entered into the data fields the system is not expecting to see. Examples include the +, -, #, & and * characters. If the field requests a number, be sure to enter a number and not any other type of character – including commas. Please call us if you continue to receive this message.

What if my browser doesn’t support certain types of code?
Upgrading to the latest version of Explorer or Netscape will improve your overall Internet experience. Upgrades to these two popular browsers are easy -- and FREE. To access the upgrades online, visit: for Explorer and Netscape.

What if I hit “submit” and nothing happens?
Try backing up (you may want to print the page with data in it if you don’t already have a copy) and selecting the menu option again. You may also want to close all open browsers on your desktop, open one again and attempt to get back into the NEDI system. Please call NPPD if this does not resolve your problem.

What if I can’t see the changes I just made?
Remember, you will first receive a message verifying the system received your data, but the data will not be “live” until it clears the system. You will know when this happens when you receive a second e-mail stating so.
